Medical Science BTEC Level 3
Course Overview
This course concentrates on the knowledge, skills and techniques found in real-life medical science situations. It includes research, practical work and problem-solving and will build on scientific skills and knowledge of key ideas in Biology and Chemistry.
In addition to students being assessed via external examination, they will build a portfolio of work which will comprise a mixture of project work, practical assessment and individual research.
Medical Science BTEC can be studied alongside a range of A-levels or other BTEC level 3 courses. It complements the skills needed in A-level Chemistry and goes well with Health & Social Care, Sport Science and Psychology.
The course is based on what Scientists do as a profession, rather than focusing only on separate academic subject areas. It:

The BTEC Level 3 Medical Science course is assessed via a combination of external assessment and coursework. As they progress through the course students will produce a portfolio of work, and be assessed on practical assignments, project work and individual research.

Four different units including: Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology; Health Issues and Scientific Reporting; Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and Biomedical Science
The exam board for this course is Pearson BTEC.
This BTEC Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A-level in any of the separate Science subjects and can be used in the same way:

Students have progressed on to a variety of Science and non-Science related degree courses.
Science subjects have included: Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Nursing, Midwifery, Biomedical Science and Social and Sports Science. Some students have progressed to NHS degree apprenticeships in Radiography and Midwifery.
Non-Science subjects have included: Teaching, Accountancy, Computing, Psychology and many more!
You should be on track to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 4 - 9, including a grade 4 or above in Biology and/or Chemistry or Combined Science, plus Maths and English.
Students should also enjoy practical work, be good at problem solving and enjoy working with numbers.
As this course involves a significant amount of portfolio work, students will need to meet regular deadlines throughout the year so good time management is important.
