Dr Oli Steele
We were really pleased to have Dr Oli Steele who left Angmering 6th form in 2013. He explained how he had originally planned to study Medicine but did not achieve the necessary grades and took a degree in Medical Science instead at Exeter University. He discovered that he really enjoyed the research side of Medicine and went on to do a Masters at Cardiff University, and then a PhD at Sussex University in Neuroscience. He now teaches medical students as part of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, lecturing in Physiology. He also continues with research in the field of neuroscience and teaching practices.
Oli spoke about the value of extracurricular activities in becoming a rounded person for any career. While in 6th form he played rugby, volunteered at Chestnut Tree House and worked part time at a local pharmacy. All of these helped him to develop the all-important transferable skills - such as communication and working with people - that apply to many careers, as well as boosting his university application.
Oli also advised students that while it is helpful to have a goal, the most important thing is to find out what really interests you, and be prepared for this to take you on a different path from the one you initially thought you would take!
We are thrilled that Oli has joined our school governors team and look forward to working him going forward.
We are a Brighton and Sussex Medical School Hub, offering a programme that supports students across the local area who are interested in careers in the medical profession.
