Emma Fallon - Lancaster University
Emma Fallon joined us this morning. She works for Lancaster University on the outreach team, and gave a presentation about employability and how to make your application stand out when applying to university and/or employment. Emma studied Geography at Sussex University and also led a workshop for our Year 12 Geography students on careers in Georgaphy.
Emma spoke about the increasing competition for graduate jobs post-Covid, with a more global approach and hybrid working becoming more normal in many companies. Students with a wide range of transferable skills and experience will stand out, so it is important to build a portfolio throughout 6th from and university years. This can include extra-curricular activites like sport or volunteering, part-time jobs and work experience done in Year 12 and as part of your degree (for example, as an industrial placement year).
Miss Hussey (Geography teacher at Angmering School) also contributed to the presentation as a fellow Georgaphy graduate, having studied at Lancaster University. She talked about how to choose a university - think about what you want from the experience, for example location, campus versus city - and research course content as different universities will have different emphases and specialisms. Think about what subjects you enjoy in sixth form and what interests you. Use Unifrog to research the huge range of options, don't be afraid to consider universites further afield and make sure you visit as many universities as you can before applying anywhere. Consider study abroad and degree apprenticeships too.
Students were encouraged to start thinking about this now, don't leave it till Year 13. If anyone wants more help they can see Mr Bowles (Careers Manager).
