Honey Millward
Honey studied A-level Business, Maths and Sociology at Angmering Sixth Form and did not know what she wanted to do career-wise so had kept her options open. In Year 13 she was looking for apprenticeships but also applied to university for Business/Finance related courses as a back-up plan.
After her A-levels (Summer 2023) Honey secured an apprenticeship with a local accountancy firm, but after a few weeks in post, decided it was not a good fit for her, as she had begun to consider a career in teaching. She joined The Angmering School as a Learning Support Assistant to gain some experience working with secondary aged children while considering her next steps and had lots of conversations with staff to help her think through the best route. The opportunity came up in the school to complete a degree apprenticeship in Youth Work which she is now completing part-time around her work. The course is run by University of Roehampton but is delivered online 6 hours a week. Honey is given time during her working week to focus on her studies and is able to use her work to meet the criteria for practical aspects of the course. Honey will complete her degree after 3 years and then plans to do a post-graduate qualification to become a secondary school teacher.
Honey's advice to students is:
- If you are not sure what you want to do, keep options open and apply for university as well as apprenticeships, you have nothing to lose!
- Talk to staff for advice and help: the Sixth Form Team have a wealth of experience between them and are always happy to chat through your thoughts.
- If you have a particular field of interest, look at company websites and contact employers to ask if they are offering apprenticeships. They may not be advertising, but might be willing to create a role as there are government incentives for employers to recruit apprentices.
- The peak time to apply for apprenticeships that start in the Summer/Autumn months is January/February, so make sure you register on the national apprenticeships site after Christmas (https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship) and get prepared with your CV!
